Barack Obama behind the scene

DigitalJournalist - Senator Obama was doing press interviews by telephone in a holding room between events. Sometime later as he was getting ready to begin his event, he asked me if I was photographing his shoes. When I said yes, he told me that he had already had them resoled once since he entered the race a year earlier. Providence, R.I., 3/1/2008. DigitalJournalist - The Obama family on their campaign bus before a Fourth of July picnic in Butte, Mont., 7/4/2008. They are watching a Fourth of July celebration while the crowd arrives at their own event. DigitalJournalist - Waiting: Obama listens from a back stairwell as he is introduced in Muscatine, Iowa. It was his second or third speech of the day. Unlike many of the politicians I have photographed in the past, I find it is easy to get a photograph of Obama alone. He lets his staff do their jobs and not fuss over him. Nov. 7, 2007. DigitalJournalist - I loved that he cleaned up after himself before leaving an ice cream shop

The weight of history - Catholics & Jews

Economist - EIGHT years ago, when Pope John Paul II prayed at Jerusalem’s Western Wall, there seemed to be a new level of trust between Roman Catholics and Jews. But so heavy is the historical baggage that the relationship still creaks under the strain. The latest problem is a nasty flare-up in an old argument over the role of Pius XII, who was pope during the second world war. Was he a hero who deserves to be beatified, or was he, as some Jews say, guilty of neglectful silence? [tags] history, Vatican, Jews, Catholics, jerusalem, rome [/tags]

An interesting paper was initially written by Edward V. Badolato, Executive Vice President for Homeland Security in 1980 when he was student at the US Naval War College in Newport. The guy has an interesting history, he began his first of several tours in the Middle East in 1967, shortly after the Arab-Israeli Six-Day War, when he was stationed on the Golan Heights. He was one of the first US military to actually deal with emerging Middle Eastern terrorists. He spent three tours in Viet Nam serving mainly with infantry and long-range Marine reconnaissance units. During his career, he commanded every sized Marine unit from platoon to regiment. I highly recommend reading this paper at blackwaterusa.com
