The State of ADSL in Jordan

I got my first ADSL back in 2001 and had 3gigs download cap and once you reach the cap they get you down to 64k speed instead of the 256k at that time.
With the promises and plans to make the Kingdom an IT rock star in Middle East we got the 1024k and 2048k ADSL but yet the download cap is ridicules, for 1024 you get 11gig of download and then they downgrade you to 128k and with 2048k you get 12gig (What an upgrade!) which means they are providing you with a faster mean to consume your cap, that's it. To add salt to injury they offer no extra bandwidth plans and if they do then be sure it will cost you enormous amount of money.
This kind of restriction is pain and very unfair especially when we pay around $70 a month to get that capped ADSL.
Now with the information boom especially in the era of online videos and TVs; and podcasts you could consume your 10gig in a day watching Google I/O, Techtalks, Ubuntu Developer channel on youtube and many other technical video cast, not to mention the online TV shows or podcasts. This is unfair especially when you know that most of the capital Amman is covered with fiber and the Kingdom is being covered, so none of our ISPs nor Jordan Telecoms have an excuse for such restriction.
In the last two months we heard many rumors and got many insider about giant Internet companies considering the Kingdom as potential place for their regional business which supposedly should help in making the Kingdom a better Internet place.
NOTE: This post was blogged with 128k connection after bandwidth drop from 1024 due to the sin the author made which was watching Google I/O sessions and some other normal Internet activities.

In Jordan you don't need to be a Cisco certified professional to get your hands on ADSL. Though the faster upload speeds that accompany ADSL might lend you to the core fundamentals of the 646-204 exam - you'd find that using a credit card and plugging in is easier than real exams or trying to pass the Cisco 642-901 questions and answers.

  1. Hi,
I understand you. We are in not much different situation regarding internet access. I have too expensive uncapped 2048/512k ADSL but most of the people have 1024/256k 4GB capped ADSL. And our lines are censored too. Youtube for example, it is banned with lots of other bir web sites.
BTW, I live in Turkey, so we are neighbours.

  2. I'm glad I live in Slovenia. No capped broadband connections, 1-2mbit is very common. If you live in capital Lj or other bigger cities Kranj, etc you can get 10mb for 14€, 100mb for 100€:)

  3. Hey,
Neighbor from the north(Lebanon). We have just as bad here. I have a 512/128 4GB capped ADSL connection. The only good thing is the free quota after 11 pm. But this is just to attract customers(scam by the ISP) until they remove the free quota all-together. My previous provider did the same(but they were using microwave, not DSL).
The problem in our country though are the charges imposed by the government on the ISPs. The minister has admitted that the MPT ministry brings in the most revenue to the government which is used to cover the deficit in others.

  4. Hey,
you can consider Batelco, traffic between 12 and 8 am is not counted from your 10 gigs (for a 512).
then you got to keep your activities after midnight!
I've been with Batelco for 10 months now and my bandwidth was not made down ever.

  5. I suggest starting your own ISP with some geeks, might be able to increase competition and make some money at the same time.

  6. A typical ADSL line in the United Kingdom is 8MBit (you'll hardly every actually get more than half that though). Most ISPs here cap at a few gig and then throttle you down. My current ISP (I'm switching soon) throttles me when I use 350MB per day for the rest of the day. Dropping me down to 128Kbit.
Our telecoms industry a long time ago had the chance of upgrading our infrastructure a while ago to one based on fiber, but instead gave bosses a pay rise. So now we are stuck with copper that in many cases is 30-50 years old.

  7. In countries where they don't have adsl yet or almost not I think they should just skip that technology completely. I mean it was useful because there was already so much copper in the ground.
You still see it in new neighborhoods in the netherlands as well. They build a house, hook up legacy phoneline and cable. Then you have to wait several years and they dig up your street for fiber to the home.
For the love of god just start with fiber assholes!

  8. [...] I’m so excited about cable service and I really hope they wont turn to become a monster just like what others did. [...]
