The good American spirit

As you know, Ramadan is coming up on Thursday. When I was in Amman last Fall, I didn't participate much in the holiday - I didn't fast, didn't pray or meditate much, and only went to a few Iftar (fast-breaking) celebrations. Still, I loved the few times that I did get to see, feel, and share with friends in different parts of Amman.

This year, in a spirit of experiencing my time in the Middle East to the fullest and in the Ramadan spirit of 'social solidarity with the poor and with society at large,' I've begun to read and reflect in preparation for doing my best at observing Ramadan this year. I'm even on the schedule as a Muslim employee at the call center, having promised the people there that I'll be making the effort to fast and observe the holy month. I'll be in the office from 8am-3pm, so my friends there will be a great help through most of the day.

However, the days are still long and hot in Amman and I know I'm going to need some help; there is no way I'll be able to fast even half the day if it isn't done prayerfully and with purpose. Toward that end, I'm asking you to send along a favorite prayer, passage from a holy book, or quotation - or even to recommend me a book or a film that might lend some insight or inspiration.

Thank you as always for your support & encouragement in my adventures. It seems that I am finally getting my feet on the ground here, finishing settling in to my new apartment this week, and hope to be in better touch with those of you to whom my letters have been too few or far between. :)

Masalaam (with safety, in peace)

Emily

And the question is, How many of us (Arab and Muslims) tried to do the same while staying aboard or even with their neighbours ?

Dear Microsoft : It's over. Our relationship just hasn't been working for a while, and now, this is it. I'm leaving you for another Operating system. I know this isn't a good time--you're down with yet another virus. I do hope you feel better soon--really, I do--but I, too, have to move on with my life. Fact is, in the entire time I've known you, you seem to always have a virus or an occasional worm. You should really see a doctor. That said, I just can't continue with this relationship any longer. I know you say you'll fix things, that next time it'll go better--but that's what you said the last time--and the time before that. Each time I believed you. Well, not any longer. You cheater! The truth is there's nothing more you can say to make things better. I know about your secret marriage to patent. You say you two are not seeing each other anymore, but I just don't believe it. You say you can live without patent, and I've heard that
