Aqaba blast 'at U.S. storage area' | Jad Thoughts

Aqaba blast 'at U.S. storage area' | Jad Thoughts: "(CNN) -- An explosion occurred Friday in the Jordanian southern port city of Aqaba, and its cause was under investigation, Interior Minister Aouni Yarfas said.

Port officials told CNN the explosion took place in a storage area used by by American forces when they are in port. There are currently two U.S. military vessels in the port.

Meanwhile, The Associated Press quoted police and witnesses as saying a Katyusha rocket fired from Jordan fell on the outskirts of the airport of Israel's Red Sea resort of Eilat but did not explode.

A local police commander, Avi Azulin, said the rocket left a small crater in the road about 15 meters (yards) from the airport fence. The commander said the rocket was fired from nearby Jordan, AP reported.

A passing taxi driver was lightly injured, AP said, although witnesses said the rocket did not hit his car."

King Fahd of Saudi Arabia dies | Jad Thoughts: "King Fahd, Saudi Arabia's ruler since 1982, has died.

Saudi state television announced that Crown Prince Abdullah had been named as King Fahd's successor.

King Fahd had been frail since suffering a stroke a decade ago and had delegated the running of the kingdom's affairs to Crown Prince Abdullah.

Defence Minister Prince Sultan is next in line to the throne after Abdullah, and was named crown prince, state television announced.

Members of the royal family have already pledged allegiance to Abdullah. An official ceremony confirming him as the new king is due to be held on Wednesday.

'Sorrow and sadness'

'With all sorrow and sadness, the royal court in the name of his highness Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdel Aziz and all members of the family announces the death of the servant of the two holy mosques, King Fahd bin Abdel Aziz,' Minister of Information Iyad bin Amin Madani announced on state television.

'He died after suffering an illness. God now allows the custodian of the two holy mosques, King Fahd, with great mercy and forgiveness, to reside in his wide heaven.'

The Associated Press news agency says the king died early on Monday at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital in the capital, Riyadh, where he was admitted on 27 May for unspecified medical tests.

Absolute monarch

King Fahd ascended the throne in 1982 after seven years as crown prince, making him absolute monarch of the world's largest oil-producing country and home of Islam's two holiest sites, the mosques at Mecca and Medina.

He threw the weight of the kingdom behind Arab causes and was heavily involved in regional issues such as the search for a peaceful settlement to the Lebanese civil war which ended with an agreement signed in the kingdom.

The monarch's decision in 1990 to invite American forces into Saudi Arabia after Iraq's invasion of Kuwait was heavily criticised within the country.

Many say it contributed to the rise of al-Qaeda whose "

World's first open source beer recipe | Jad Thoughts

World's first open source beer recipe | Jad Thoughts: "Students from the Information Technology University in Copenhagen are trying to help by releasing what they are calling the world's first open source beer recipe.

It is called Vores Oel, or Our Beer, and the recipe is proving to be a worldwide hit.

The idea behind the beer comes from open source software. This is software whose code is made publicly available for anyone to change and improve, provided that those changes and improvements are then shared in turn.

Perhaps the most well-known example of open source software is the Linux operating system.

Microsoft, on the other hand, creates proprietary software, meaning the company does not tend to let others see how its software works.

The Danish brewer Carlsberg takes a similar approach to beer.

Rasmus Nielsen, who runs a Copenhagen-based artist collective called Superflex, wanted to challenge the idea of 'proprietary' beer.
Software and alcohol
He was teaching a workshop on intellectual property and copyright at the Information Technology University in Copenhagen.
Mr Nielsen asked his students to think about applying open source ideas to the non-digital world.

'Why not take those ideas back to the old world, and try to apply them to other things as well?' asks Nielsen.

Why beer? As the Vores Oel website says, why not?

'It's a universal commodity that we like to think of as free, but unfortunately it isn't,' says Mr Nielsen. 'So, I thought it was an appropriate medium to confront these issues.'

A group of about 15 students at the university agreed.

'Beer is an amusing subject in a university environment,' says Thorarinn Stefansson, one of the students who signed up for the open source beer project.

'It's something more stimulating than perhaps making something non-edible or non-drinkable.'

Heavy brew
To get started, the students met with the author of a Danish book on home-brewing.

Jordan OSS 2005 Second day report | Jad Thoughts: "The second and last day of Jordan OSS 2005 wasn't bad thought, except they didn't start on time, nor finishing on time not to mention skipping the last Q & A session and blowing up Mr. Tom Adelstein computer power supply.

Mr Olivier Berard spoke about How to define an Open source Strategy , actually his speech focus on choosing and applying the right Open source license to your project, his presentation was great.

Australian accent ROCKS!
Mr James Dalziel session was about using OSS in education, LAMS is a revolutionary new tool for designing, managing and delivering online collaborative learning activities.

Ethanz Zuckerman, This guy love what he's doing, And I'm sure if there is a women called Open Knowledge he will marry her, If I recall correctly he start talking about the Success story of Wikipedia, and how the guy behind it convert it from a total failure into total success just by converting to Open Knowldge.

Mr Tom Adelstein has spoken about the World trends in open source, which I didn't understand anything of this topic not sure why, but blame me.

Mr Mohammed Sameir from Egypt gave us a spotlight on the current status of Arabization/localization of Linux and open source software, and you know what, I'm very happy that we've reached this level of localization with a very small team of volunteers.

Mr Tom Adelstein in his third session spoke about emerging technology in open source (1) Low cost computer assembly - an IT niche for Jordan (2) Ubuntu: State of the art linux Desktop.

Unfortunately he didn't talk about Ubuntu state of the art linux Desktop, I was waiting for this topic but he disappointed me, as we have already disappointed him.

It was very clear that Mr tom was so appointed of the small number of attendees, small number of participant
but what he don't know is that we have a very small number of people who's interesting in Open source which Intaj didn't invite them and most of peopl"

Jordan OSS 2005 first day report

Jordan OSS 2005 first day report | Jad Thoughts: "The first day of Open Source Seminar wasn't that bad, whatever nothing is perfect.
Today I've learned you shouldn't be a good speaker to participate, nor you must have a good English accent to speak, and if it happens and I was in charge to organise such event its good idea to keep the VIP speech's last so other speakers will have a chance to speak to someone.

After all the seminar was good just because there was a good speakers with very interesting topics such as
Why Linux - Mr Ahmed Shanab
OS developer's perspective: An Open Source toolkit Mr.Mohammed Sameer.
How to make money using open source software Mr. Kefah issa
How to save money using open source software - Mr. Ammar Ibrahim

The Q & A and Panel discussion was the funniest part, There was no questions at all, and there was only about 20 attendees at the last Q & A session, however we had about 50 for lunch i'm not sure why."

One-man-comedy "The Mansaf Trail from Amman to Ramallah" | Jad Thoughts: "First of all I would like to thank Lina for taking care of Jordanplanet - Amman This Month section

It was really great show, Nabil sawlha is well known comedian in Jordan, and today show was so special, he stated his deep thoughts in today's show, he had a message to deliver and I think it was delivered.

His show was somehow pulse of Jordanians, he talked about Government, ministers, people, Jordanian Palestinian relation, the differences between today's family customs and how it was before.

And at the end of the show he announced about his coming soon shows at his theater, and the most important was his Laughter club! YES Laugh club in Jordan, Just go and laugh and no one will say it's 'gelet 2adab', He spent couple of minutes talking about the advantages of laugh.

ENGLISH programming language

ENGLISH programming language | Jad Thoughts: "isnt it nice to have programming language in your native language ? no special requirements, speak and it will be parsed
it's very interesting what I've found today, but unfortenatly there is nothing much about it

ENGLISH (actually trademarked in all caps) was a database retrieval and reporting language somewhat like SQL, but with no actual programming or update capabilities, released by Microdata in 1973 and named so that the company's brochures could claim that developers could generate reports on their implementation of the Pick operating system using English.

Apart from this marketing trick, no programming language exists that is currently used as a human language or vice-versa. However, Lojban is a human language with traits that make it a candidate for use as a programming language in the future.

Google site 'used by drug gang'

Google site 'used by drug gang' | Jad Thoughts: "Ten people have been arrested in Brazil after authorities discovered them allegedly using Google's online community site, Orkut, to sell drugs.

The drugs ring was uncovered after police tapped phone calls and monitored online communications through Orkut.

The site, used for building online communities and making contacts, is hugely popular in Latin America.

According to media reports, more than half of the seven million community members are from Brazil.

'We discovered the drug ring first via authorised phone tapping, and later the investigation included monitoring of their activities on the internet,' an officer at the Drugs Enforcement Service in Niteroi, near Rio de Janeiro, told the Reuters news agency.

'We are aware of the situation and are currently looking into it,' Google said in a statement.

'When we are made aware of situations that are against our terms of service we take appropriate action.'

Social spaces

Orkut, launched by Google in 2004, is an invitation-only service which lets people build up networks of contacts with whom they chat.

It is similar to other social networking sites which have become increasingly popular such as Friendster, and MySpace which was recently bought by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp.

The Brazilian authorities say that the drug dealers used the Orkut network service to link up deals to sell ecstasy and marijuana.

The online community site was created by Turkish software engineer Orkut Buyukkokten."
